Brazilian Culture: Differences #3

In English hands have fingers and feet have toes. And then there’s the thumb that sometimes falls into a limbo of its own depending on who you ask.

In Portuguese there’s no such distinction. Fingers and toes are both called dedos (singular: dedo).

To Brazilians the very idea that dedos aren’t the same is bizzare beyond belief, just as to an English speaker considering the appendages on the feet the same as that of the hands would be a completely alien concept.

How does one differentiate when talking about their toes or fingers in Portuguese?

Fingers are dedos da mão (dedos of the hand)

Toes are dedos do pé (dedos of the foot)
